Upscaling bio-economic model: economic and environmental assessment of introducing legume and protein rich crops in farming systems of Western France

Résumé

In Western France, high amounts of imported protein is used to feeding animals. The development of legume and protein-rich (LPR) crops may be an option to compensate the lack of protein autonomy. A bio-economic model is proposed to assess the environmental and economic impacts of LPR crop implementation at regional scale. The main added-values of this model are: (1) a modelling chain upscaling the results from farm to territory level, (2) different technical coefficients taking into account farm diversity and bio-physical heterogeneity and (3) a regional partial equilibrium model describing the possible compensations of protein autonomy between farms.
