How can we better support the future in dairy farmers from the point of view of the stakeholders?

Résumé

The context of milk production is changing in France. The operations are expanding and specializing, support to the farmers must evolve. During 2017, dairy farmers and advisors were brought together in focus groups to reflect and discuss the support needs in these dairy farms, as they felt they were for themselves, in the case of farmers, or among the farmers they work with in their activity for the advisors. Farmers in dairy farms were selected on specific criteria: more than 100 cows, more than 3 persons in the workforce or with a high productivity per labour unit (more than 500,000 litres per labour unit). Two focus groups of farmers took place, 12 farmers in Western France and 14 in Eastern France. The focus group of advisors took place in Brittany with 18 advisors from various trades and structures (banks, veterinarians, milk recording, food, chambers of agriculture, strategy consulting, National Social Insurance for agricultural workers, …). The farmers and advisors gathered expressed their strong interest of this purpose for these dairy farms. Farmers identify specificities in the management of large dairy herds ‘an essential organization of work, more time spent in the office than in the stable, business management and the management at herd-scale and not per cow’. Western farmers have highlighted their need for support around the management of human relations, and in particular communication within the work collective, while Eastern farmers testify to needs on employee management (training, sustainability of the workforce, labour legislation,...) and how to adapt their farm to a changing context (market uncertainties). The advisors insisted on the need to develop long-term support measures (preventive rather than curative actions), whose added value is sometimes difficult to have recognized and sold to farmers. They insist on the need to acquire specific references on large herds, as well as on the sharing of various data between advisors in order to design an approach adapted to each farm.
