CFD analysis of Impatiens crop irrigation scenarios inside a greenhouse

Résumé

Due to water scarcity, in greenhouses in particular, reducing water consumption by increasing water efficiency is of high interest. The aim of this study is to test different irrigation scenarios in order to find the best irrigation scenario for reducing the amount of water used. In this prospect, a CFD (Computational Fluid Dynamics) model integrating substrate plant-atmosphere water transfers was developed. The difficulty arises from the strong coupling between the greenhouse climate and the crop behavior. The crop was considered as a porous medium exchanging latent and sensible heat with its environment. The stomatal resistance (Rs), which is the key factor impacting the transpiration rate, was modeled. The water restriction effect was incorporated in the Rs model through a specific stress function based on the growing media water potential. It was calculated using the van Genuchten model and the water balance between irrigation and transpiration. The CFD model had been first validated against experiments conducted inside a 100 m2 glasshouse with the same plant model and showed good agreement. Different irrigation scenarios were then tested reducing progressively the water supply by providing a lesser amount of water than the growing media water capacity. The simulations showed the ability of the model to predict the impact of reducing water inputs on the plant transpiration, growing media water potential and climate distribution inside the greenhouse. The tests also showed that the water supply could be reduced by 20% without significantly impacting the transpiration rate, and therefore potentially the plant growth.
