Résumé

Invasive species between biology and social sciences: what distinctive features for French overseas territories? - Invasive species are a major factor in the decline of biodiversity in the French overseas territories. Taking into account human factors is essential to a comprehensive understanding of the dynamics of these species and to develop effective management methods. This interaction between biological sciences and human sciences for the management of biological invasions should take into account the specificities of overseas territories. The insularity, the geographical distance, the relationship with the homeland and the attachment to a Western economic region, are all factors that influence both the evolution of ecosystems and societies. Mainly composed of tropical oceanic islands, French overseas territories belong to biodiversity hot-spots, and are particularly rich in endemic species, but also particularly susceptible to invasions by alien species. The balance between natural heritage and ecosystem services in the public policies of biodiversity conservation shows important differences between the homeland and overseas territories, with the value of the natural heritage being more important overseas. This can result from ecological or economic constraints, but can also reveal differences in the perception of environmental ethics. These features make the French overseas territories a laboratory for interdisciplinary studies between human and environmental sciences. Interdisciplinary studies focusing on common issues based on the management of invasive species overseas are a potential source of methodological and conceptual innovations in each discipline, and can help developing innovative solutions for their sustainable management.
